Yiddish research workshop in language, folklore, literature

The workshop scheduled initially from 11 till 15 July 2011, was postponed in a date still indefinite.


News of our co-workers

This summer, staff members of the Paris yiddish center will be working all over the world.

Yitskhok Niborski, along with Annick Prime-Margules, will be teaching at the Yiddish summer course in Brussels, from July 25 to August 5, 2011 (further information here).

Natalia Krynicka will teach at the summer program of Yiddish language and culture in Vilnius from July 24 to August 19, 2011 (further information here).

Gilles Rozier, director of the Medem Library, is publishing on the net from June 27 to Sept. 25, 2011 Un été boulevard Rothschild, the diary he kept from in the summer of 2008, when he was writer in residence in Tel-Aviv to write his book D'un pays sans amour, to be published at the end of August (Editions Grasset). The diary touches on Jewish culture, Yiddish poets, and a writer struggling with his characters and with some remarkable residents of this city, the first Hebrew town of modern times, which was celebrating that year its 100th birthday. Can be read in episodes all summer here.

He will also teach at the international seminar of yiddish language and culture taking place in Warsaw from July 4 to 22, 2011 (further information here).


News of the project Judaica Europeana

The catalogue of Rachel can be consulted by the Catalogue collectif de France (CCFR) of the Bibliothèque nationale
The catalogue Rachel (www.rachelnet.org), through which one can consult the catalogues of the Bibliothèque Medem-Maison de la culture yiddish, the libraries of the AIU, Séminaire israélite de France, Musée d'art et d'histoire du judaïsme and the Centre français des musiques juives, can now be consulted from the Catalogue collectif de France (CCFR) de la Bibliothèque nationale. This will make it possible to increase the visibility of the collections of all the member libraries of Rachel, including that of the Maison de la culture yiddish-Bibliothèque Medem.

Ten institutions involved in the preservation of the Jewish Heritage in Europe (Bibliothèque Medem, Bibliothèque de l’Alliance israélite universelle, London Jewish Museum, Jewish Museum of Athens, Library of Goethe University of Frankfurt-am-Main, British Library, Jewish Archives of Hungary, Cuuture Ministry of Italy, Jewish Historic Institute of Warsaw and the Research Center Amitié of Bologna) are participants in the project Judaica Europeana. This project is subsidized by the European Commission and coordinated by the European Association for Jewish Culture (London).

Judaica Europeana will offer, at www.judaica-europeana.eu, a wealth of digitized documents dealing with contribution of the Jewish people to cities in all of Europe. By the end of 2011, hundreds of thousands of books, postcards, posters and audio/video recordings will be put online by the various partner institutions. A considerable number of documents have already been put online.

Virtual Exhibitions developed by the different member institutions will also be made available through Judaica Europeana. At the present time the following exhibits can already be visited:
- Yiddish Theater in London (presented by the London Jewish Museum)
- From Dada to Surrealism: Jewish artists of the avant-garde born in de Romania, 1910-1938 (offered by the Jewish History Museum of Amsterdam)
- 150 years in the service of education (presented by the Alliance israélite universelle)
- Images of the Jews of Greece (by the Jewish Museum of Athens)
- Postcards with Jewish themes (by the Jewish archives of Hungary)
La Maison de la culture yiddish-Bibliothèque Medem will, within the next few months, contribute to this part of the project by putting on line its exhibition, “400 years of Yiddish books as seen through the collections of the Medem Library

“La nuit des lettres,” literary event in Montpellier
TABLE-RONDEOn May 25, 2011 the Jewish Community Center of Montpellier held its annual program at the municipal library, the theme of which this year was Yiddish literature. Two round tables were organized, led by Paule-Henriette Lévy, the first, with Michèle Tauber and Rabbi Elie Lemel, devoted to Hassidic tales; and the second, in which two co-workers of the Maison de la culture yiddish, Rubye Monet, Board member of MCY, Yiddish teacher and an editor of the Yidisher tamtam and Gilles Rozier, director of the Medem Library, spoke on the three writers of the Singer family (Isaac Bashevis Singer, Israel Joshua Singer and Esther Kreitman) and on women writers in Yiddish (see photo).


The Yiddish-French dictionary is for sale!

The re-edition of the Yiddish-French dictionary by Yitskhok Niborski and Bernard Vaisbrot has been published.
The preparation and the publication of this dictionary were made possible thanks to the European Commission, the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture (New York), the Alain de Rotschild Institute, the Friends of Alter Kacyzne and the United Jewish Fund.
This first re-edition has received support from the Shoah
Memorial Foundation.
