A provincial town in Tsarist Russia. Shimele Saroker, a modest Jewish tailor, is covered in debts. But suddenly he is rescued by destiny: he wins the grand prize in the lottery and becomes one of the richest men in town. What happens now in his life and the life of his family? You’ll see when you attend the new show of the Yiddish troupe Troïm-Teater: Dos groyse gevins , an adaptation of Sholem-Aleykhem's masterpiece.

Cost of tuition
Yiddish courses (weekly) : 320 € for one course. Students under 30: 220 € (including cost of photocopies). A person enrolled in one course can take a second one for 180 €. Students under 30 : 110 €.

Other Workshops
Learn singing, acting, klezmer music or Yiddish cooking

Choir Tshiribim
led by Shura Lipovsky
No prior knowledge of music or Yiddish is necessary – all you need is to want to sing.
Led by the well-known interpreter of Yiddish songs Shura Lipovsky, who is also an ambassadress of Musicians Without Borders, working for peace through music and dance.
Cost : 185 € (18 sessions, 2 hours each) including cost of photocopies.
One Sunday per month
Sessions scheduled for October 17, November 14 and 28, December 19 from 11 a.m. to I p.m. and 2.30 to 4.30 p.m. Participants eat lunch together, each one contributing something to eat or drink. Complete calendar to be announced soon.

Theater Workshop
Directed by Charlotte Messer
assisted by Noëmi Waysfeld and Renée Kaluszynski.
Two Tuesdays per month
Sessions scheduled for October 12 and 26, November 9 and 30, December 14, from 6.30 to 8.30 p.m.
Participants learn theatrical technique and improve their skill in speaking Yiddish. No prior knowledge of language or theater is required. This is a learning workshop whose aim is not aim to produce shows on stage.

The troupe Troïm-Teater
Directed by Charlotte Messer.
The aim of this theater troupe is to stage Yiddish plays and perform them for an audience. The troupe has already produced three shows and is now rehearsing its latest show with a view to further performances. Most of its actors got their training in the theater workshop.
Complete calendar will be announced some time in October
Cost : 160 € (15 sessions per year) plus 10 € to cover cost of photocopies.

Klezmer workshops

Five sessions per trimester
One Sunday per month
Sessions scheduled for October 3 and 17, November 14 and 29, December 12,
from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This workshop is intended for amateurs wishing to learn a new kind of music and to share their pleasure with other musicians. Participants learn the great standards and can build a repertoire for public performances, insuring that klezmer will remain a living and popular music.
There are frequent master classes led by top-level musicians.
Cost: 170 € for 15 sessions a year including 10 € to cover cost of photocopies. Students under 30: 150 €. This workshop is open to juniors of 13 and up who have practiced their instruments for a minimum of 3 years.

Yiddish cooking workshop
Led by Régine Nebel
The aim of this workshop is to transmit Yiddish cooking, its specialties, techniques and vocabulary. Participants speak French or Yiddish as they wish and may come with parents or children. Open to amateurs as well as to experienced cooks.
Will resume early in 2011.
Cost: 15 €. Participants must be members of the Maison de la culture yiddish. Each session is limited to 20 persons. Reservation and prepayment required.

Kindershul > For Children from 3 to 12 years old
Led by Sharon Bar-Kochva, Anyel Fisbein and Fleur Kuhn
with occasional participation of Marthe Desrosières and the Klezmer workshop.

Theme for the year 5771 > The family.

Nineteen 3-hour sessions per year, including celebrations of Jewish holidays.

2.30 to 3.45 p.m.: introduction to Yiddish language
The children are divided into three groups for language instruction: with learning the alef-beys, simple exercises in the form of games, acquisition of vocabulary and writing, learning songs and poems, reading simple texts.

3.45 p.m.: half-hour break for a snack
The children bring their own snack. The Kindershul provides drinks.

4.15 to 5.30 p.m.: activities workshop
The children come together to practice a number of varied activities such as arts and crafts, singing, music and theater.

Cost: 205 €. (including pedagogic material). Reduced rate: for other children from the same family enfant d’une même fratrie.
Cost of one session: 15 €. Family membership in the Maison de la culture yiddish : 75 € partially tax-deductible (CERFA receipt).
Dates : October 3 and 17, November 7 and 21, December 5 (Khanike !) and 12.

Literary Saturdays
First literary afternoon in our new premises
Y. Y. Trunk and his major work Poyln

Saturday October 2, at 3 p.m
For the first program in our new home, we have selected the writer Y.Y.Trunk, whose great work, Poyln, best paid homage to Polish Jewry. Chosen passages will be read by Szulim Rozenberg, one of the pillars of the Maison de la culture yiddish.

This seminar, conducted entirely in Yiddish, is accessible to anyone having studied the language for at least three years. Hours : 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 2 to 4.30 p.m. Cost : 34 €.Members : 27 €. Participants have lunch together, each one contributing something to eat or drink.

Literary Encounter

Michel Alessio translator and prefacer of La langue des Juifs du Pape, by Zosa Szajkowski (éd. Vent Terral).

Tuesday October 5, 8.00 p.m.

Zosa Szajkowski, author of this study, was a Polish Jew who arrived in France before WW II, joined the Foreign Legion, and eventually settled in Carpentras, in the south of France. He did extensive research in Judeo-Provençal, examining local poetry and Judeo-Christian relations in the regions. His book, written in Yiddish, was published in N.Y. in 1948.

Annette Wieviorka

Tuesday October 19, 8.00 p.m.

Annette Wieviorka has donated to the Medem Library a collection of over 300 testimonies in French from survivors of the Genocide. This collection will enter the Library under the name of the donor, adding to the many testimonies, mainly in Yiddish, already in the collections.
This evening, Yitskhok Niborski will dialogue with Annette Wieviorka, with whom he collaborated on Les livres du Souvenir (éd. Julliard, 1983). Wieviorka will discuss her work as a historian as well as her personal relations with the Jewish culture of Eastern Europe.

News of our Staff

Gilles Rozier, director of the Medem Library and a writer in his own right, was writer-in-residence this year in a program sponsored by the Regional Council of Ile-de-France. He chose as a subject of reflection the successive waves of immigration in the district of Belleville – Jews from Eastern Europe in the interwar years and the Arabs, Africans and Asians that make up the population today.
